Energy Upgrade California
Energy Upgrade California® is a state initiative to help Californians take action to save energy and conserve natural resources, help reduce demand on the electricity grid, and make informed energy management choices at home and at work.

What is the Energy Upgrade California® Home Upgrade?

Home Upgrade is a “whole house” approach to home energy efficiency. Rather than focusing on individual energy efficiency upgrades, the program addresses your home’s energy needs as a complete system. For example, your air conditioner can keep your house cool and use less energy if you seal the air ducts to eliminate drafts. Home Upgrade helps you maximize your energy efficiency, lower your energy bills, and increase your home’s comfort.

What are the benefits of a Home Upgrade?

There are great reasons to get a Home Upgrade, like incentives and rebates of up to $6,500* for improvements to your single-family home. Benefits can include:

  • Improved comfort and indoor air quality
  • Reduced energy use
  • Lower utility bills
  • Increased home value

How does the Home Upgrade program work?

Home Upgrade allows you to bundle several energy efficiency improvements for maximum savings. Home Upgrade connects you with home energy professionals including Participating Contractors who have been trained in the whole-house approach to energy efficiency. Participating Contractors help you to determine which improvements are best for your home, fill out necessary paperwork (including rebate/incentive forms) and conduct safety compliance checks. Home Upgrade will help you achieve your goal of maximizing energy savings, improving your comfort and lowering your utility bills throughout the year.

There are two Home Upgrade options to choose from: Home Upgrade or Advanced Home Upgrade. We can help you select which option is best for you and direct you to more ways to lower your utility bills and find potential financing options.

What’s the difference between Home Upgrade and Advanced Home Upgrade?

Home Upgrade focuses on your building shell to help maintain a warmer or cooler indoor environment and can improve your home’s energy efficiency by at least 10%. Upgrades may include insulation, whole house air sealing, duct sealing, furnace and AC replacements, and other energy efficiency opportunities to help you lower your utility bill and increase your comfort.

Advanced Home Upgrade includes these same improvement as well as other upgrades and equipment replacement. Your Participating Contractor works with you to develop a customized plan to achieve energy reductions of up to 45%. Additional upgrades may include a whole house fan, cool roof, hardwire lighting, tankless water heater system, energy-efficient windows, and more.
